Sweet Joan Widow of Graham Sweet (Superintendent of the Victoria Baths in Frome for many years) has passed away peacefully aged 98 in the Brunswick Nursing Home in Gloucester, close to daughter Roberta and her husband Terry who live in Cheltenham. Joan will be remembered as having been the Clerk to the Parish Councils of Rode (37 years) and Beckington (40 years). Back in the 1980's she was an active member of the Local Study Group, treasurer at Whitbourne Baptist Church, a member of the town's music society and later treasurer of St Mary's Church, Innox Hill. She was also Chairman of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council and took part in the organisation of a "hippy walk" around Frome Victoria Park, raising £850 (quite a sum in those days.) She moved after Graham's death to Stoke Gifford to be with her Daughter and Son in Law where she became clerk to the Governors of Little Stoke Infants School, Vice Chairman of the local gardening society, served on the committee of the local Women's institute and played a lot of bridge. Finally, the family moved to Cheltenham where Joan, though by now in a wheel chair, continued to enjoy visits to the Theatre and playing Rummikub. Failing health finally placed her at the Brunswick Nursing Home in Gloucester where she was incredibly well looked after. She is being laid to rest with Graham at a private family burial at Winterbourne Baptist Church on 14th December.
